The 10 Minute Rule
We aren’t motivated all the time.
It’s facts — and very normal.
Social media has normalized people looking happy all of the time.
Doing the things all of the time.
Having time to do things all of the time.
Having resources to do the things.
We can have these things and be happy and sad and feel unmotivated and driven all at the same time.
And guess what?
THAT IS OKAY.
This is where the 10 minute rule comes into play. We use this on days where we do have something we want to do, but may not be feeling extremely motivated to do it. We’re tired — everyone is tired. We all have life stressors and can blame it on exactly this. But if you want to do something that badly, what is actually holding you back?
Are you comparing?
Are you using this excuse for when it doesn’t go your way?
Are you saying ‘I’ll do it later’ and then never come back to it?
10 minutes.
That’s all we’re asking of you.
10 minutes when you’re feeling unmotivated or tired to do the thing you want to do.
What happens is when we start to move our body, energy moves in our space. Energy is always there (think of Newton’s Laws back in physics yeahhhh), it is just being utilized differently. When you shift things around, energy moves and your body starts to feel different.
The first five minutes may not feel great. Yeah, it’s going to feel a little forced. Stick it out for 10.
You’re shifting energy.
Moving things around in your space.
What happens when you hit the 10 minutes?
Well, there’s two options:
You keep going.
You stop.
9 times out of 10 you will keep going, and do it in increments. Re-evaluate every 5 minutes. We want to bet you’ll feel better, and before you know it, you’re done with the thing you wanted to do.
If after the 10 minutes you’re feeling meh but want to try, go for another 5 minutes and check back in. Continue the process.
If you really aren’t feeling it, don’t stress — it’s just not in the cards today and that is okay. Go back home, walk up the stairs, come back to wherever you were and continue your day. Don’t beat yourself up about it, as easy as it is to do so. We can’t always be on every single day. We’re human, so don’t stop living like a human.
Who are you doing this for at the end of the day?
We hope you said ‘me’.
When you take the comparison factor out and really shift your attention to you, it all changes.
10 minutes is all we’re asking on those days you’re wanting to do something but you may not feel motivated to do so. Move your energy around and your space will thank you for it.
